I ran into a similar situation. The bank that I went to told me they could not open a checking account for me, but they would allow me to open a savings account and with 3 months of good activity they would allow me to open a checking account with ATM card, and 3 months after that I was allowed to have a Visa Check Card. So, if you can not get a checking, try a savings, if you are an existing bank customer, that can help get the checking account
