The quickest way to deal with this may be to write to the credit bureau that is listing the bogus item, and tell them that it doesn't belong to you. If you have the name that the collection agency says is on the account, then mention that in your letter to the bureau.

What might have happened is that there was some similar identification information (address, date of birth, similar-sounding name, etc), which caused the credit bureau's computers to think that this item belonged in your file. With very large and complex databases, this can happen sometimes.

There should be an address listed somewhere on the credit report for submitting consumer disputes like this. The process can take as much as 45 days.
