Civil Judgement holding up refinancing house.

My wife and I are trying to refinance our house, but there is a judgement against her from and old friend that she had borrowed money from back in the 80's. Without going into detail, our lender (who knew about the judgement when we first mortgaged the house) says that they cannot procede with the refinancing until the judgement is cleared up. The original judgement was for $3,000 but now the friend has tacked on 10% and refiled the judgement which now stands at $7,500. What can we do legally to either get around this judgement or settle it. Neither my wife or I am willing to pay the $7,500. We are willing to pay the original amount and the friend has been informed of this. We all are in hard times, but paying over twice the original balance is ludicrous to us. Any help would be appreciated. BKA
