law office calling

Today a local Houston law office left a message to call them back. the machine cut off and i didnt get the full name. (Started with Weinberger and other partners) Im pretty sure it is for Cingular. I was unable to pay due to wife not working while on maternity leave. she is back to work and i want to pay it especially now that lawyer calling. I know that im supposed to pay OC and not CA, but with the law office calling now. is it too late to call cingular collections and just pay it before law office files. I dont want to turn a $200 cell bill into a huge judgement with legal fees. How do i know that cingular has not sold debt for pennies on dollar to "shyster law firm inc." what should i do?
