understanding my credit report

Just some rambling observations and questions about my report. Feel free to share any insights you may have.

I have two credit card accounts that I keep current.

Next up is a Collection Account from Sherman Acquisition. Date of Last Activity is January 1998 (SOL is 6 years, expired). Will this magically disappear sometime between now and January?

I have a credit card account from Providian which is charged off. I recently settled this one which apparently was pointless, but it was only a couple hundred dollars. Last Activity was April 1998. This one too should cease to trouble me within a year or so.

I also have a collection, which is Paid. Last Activity was October 2002, it was paid in July 2003. I'm guessing this one will stick around to haunt me until Oct 2009 or July 2010. Honeslty, how bad is something like that on my report? Can I try to sweet talk the creditor into banishing it, or is it there to stay?

One other oddity is that the account that I paid shows up as charged off by Providian, but also as a second account 120+ days past due by Midland. This strikes me as wrong in some way. Is that normal and proper? Or do I need to start bitching to someone to get it removed?

The negative factors listed are Negative Comment/collection, balances due on old accounts, balances too high on current accounts, and accounts aren't very old. The balances listed don't seem to add up in any rational way so I don't think I can make much sense of things until the old ones fall off.
