Asset searches come up with a frightening amount of information. I saw that when I was closing on a mortgage many years ago. They had the SSN on the accounts, the primary owners name, the amounts in the accounts and the average monthly and daily balances.

However, dealing with trying to cash a check and work on a cash basis is a real bother. I would follow Why Chat's usual advise and close the account, but reopen a new account with someone else (not usually the spouse) as primary.

And make sure the check is direct deposit, because it proves the source of the funds as exempt.
