Americredit turned Cavalry (co-signer)

I co-signed on a truck loan back in 1998. The ex wrecked it and never paid. I got a call from Cavalry abut 3 weeks ago asking me to settle for $4000. Americredit originally listed $6000 on my CR and now Cavalry lists it as $11000. Any ideas on how i can handle this?
