Charge Off time frame

I have a charge off credit card from B of A that states the last activity was back in 1998. I've been told that after 7 years it has to removed from the bureau. On a recent credit report I noticed my account was sold to a collection agency and reported as a new revolving account. First of all I was NEVER notified by the collection agency they had the account, and secondly am I better off waiting another year to have the charge off deleted....or if I settle the charge off does the 7 years start over as a paid charge-off???
