Julie you did the right thing in not giving out personal information or relatives information to these guys. I repeat, you never know who it is on the phone and what their reasons are. It is never safe policy ever to give out your relatives or your family's information to any person who calls on the phone trying to find them.

I have had people call looking for my BIL at our house. I just politely inform them that they have the wrong number. If they try and start to get information from me, I tell them that I am sorry but we have a family policy to never release family personal information to any person who calls unsolicited on the phone, then inform them that you are not in the position to pass on information.

If it seems really important, I can forward the message and phone number one time to the relative but after that, the message will not get delivered. I have said that before. They have never bothered me again.
