Thanks for all the great advice! I would like to be able to go to the court house and talk to someone, but I don't have a clue which courthouse issued any judgements. We've never been served any summons by anyone. In fact we weren't aware there was a debt until we received the notice from our bank that our account had been frozen. We've never received correspondence from Cohen & Slamowitz. We've never receivced any copy of any judgementMy girlfriend (who is the person named for the debt) thinks that she may have had a Discover card account about 9 years ago. Does anyone know the SOL in New York for this kind of thing? When we called to speak with Cohen & Slamowitz, they had a phone number for my girlfriend at a place which she hasn't lived for 11 years. When we told them that we hadn't heard from them and if we had we would have settled, they rudely told us that it was enough that they tried to contact us at the 11 year old number. It just all sounds so shady, but we're pretty poor and paying a lawyer would bankrupt us. I will check to see if any lawyers will take the case and take a percentage or something, but otherwise, chalk one more up to the big guys. Our bank will do absolutely nothing for us. It's almost as if Cohen & Slamowitz is their customer and not us. One further complication: My bank (M&T) has a policy that they hold all checks deposited to your account for 14 days when you are a new customer. So you can't draw on them. So, when we set up the account the branch manager told us that all we have to do is tell the teller to cash them first and then deposit them. This is what she has always done. M&T was more than happy to offer that information to Cohen & Slamowitz, so I'm not even sure if any of the money that is frozen is savable even though it all came directly from SSI and Child Support.
