Credit balances and illness?

I have a close friend whose father has an outstanding credit balance on his credit card with Chase. However, he is deathly ill with liver cancer at this point in time, and it is not known how long he will live. I would like to know what options can be taken to resolve the matter of the outstanding balance. They have no credit insurance, and, in their circumstances, no means to pay the debt. Thank you.
