I recently received a dunning letter from a CA stating that I owe close to $4000 (original amt plus int & collection fees) for an outstanding debt. I don't remember ever doing buisness with the original creditor, so I called the CA and told them I don't owe the money. The CSR I spoke with said the original debt is from 1989 and the last payment was in 1992. I asked them to send me something in writing to prove that it was my debt. So they sent me a notarized statement signed by someone from the CA. What are my options? I live in NJ and the SOL is 6 years.
