Bad Credit - Charge Offs

Hi, I have a few charge off's on my credit report that have since been paid in full. My Credit report has marked them as "c/o - 'paid in full'"

or "Paid - was a collection account"

4 of these accounts are DOE student loans that were defaulted on and then reconsolidated into another loan that is in good standing (noted "Current - never been late").

The collection agency that handled these accounts (Delta Management)(and also handled other accounts which have also since been paid) told me that they would have the items removed from my credit report when the accounts were settled. It has been almost 4 years, and these items are still present on my credit report.

What are my options for getting these items removed? It is kiling my credit (fico of 568 even though I have never ben late on a mortgage or debt in 2 years).

At first , I thought that I could have the DOE items removed because the date opened is listed as 03/1996.

I called the DOE and they told me they would send me a letter, and to use the letter to dispute the items with the credit agency (Experian).

Will this tactic be successfull? I reviewed my credit report and lists the debt information as
Date Opened: 03/1996
Reported Since: 04/2001

I am a tad confused, the opened date is clearly over the 7 year mark, but I am not sure which date they use to determine the removal date.

I don't know which method I should use to dispute these items or if it is even worth me disputing them at all. Should I say that the accounts were paid in full and they are more than 7 years old, or do they go by the 'Reported Since' date. If they use the 'Reported Since' date, will the letter from the DOE help me get the items removed?

And what about Delta Management reniging on their word that they woul dhave all these items removed when they were paid?

Thanks, I appreciatte any and al feedback!
