The short answer is NO, the son is not liable for the debts of his parents whether they live or not.

As JK already mentioned, debts of the deceased are paid out of the estate - if there is one. Even if a will exists, probate proceedings don't always happen. For creditors to get paid from the estate, they have to file a claim against it, and they only have a specific window of time in which to make those claims. After that window closes, they're outta luck.
