"We just called your payroll dept..."

I just had someone call from Discover Card for a $6,000 balance I have with them and haven't paid for about 1.5 years. She asked if I have the money to pay now. I said no. She said we spoke with your payroll dept and you don't have any garnishments right now so we will have you served out there. I said ok and she said bye. Can they just call my payroll dept and get garnishment info on me? I should've asked who they spoke to.
