Once they are charged off, the original takes the tax break, claims them as bad debt. So, they should not have accepted your checks. I think you might have a good case against the original creditors, but I also don't think this is something you should tackle yourself.
Look for an attorney, you might be able to find someone that will take the case on contingency. If you have a good case, they will.
