I was not completely clear in my first post. AMEX charged off the account, but did not turn it over to a collection agency. It was their attorney that contacted me, so perhaps that was why after I paid the debt they were able to remove it from my credit reports. I'm not saying this would work for everyone, but it did for me and just wanted to pass it on. I was surprised and shocked that they would allow me to make payments on this debt, and as I said, it took me 2 years.
