Well, you certainly don't want them to think you have assets that they can grab in a judgment. By telling them you have to borrow the money, you are in a better position to negotiate a lower dollar amount.

Problem with most collectors is that they are greedy and want it all. If I were going to take this approach, I would hire a lawyer to do it for me.
