Chargeoffs and Settlements?

Here's the deal: I was overseas for four years, family emergency, priorities, chargeoff on four cards. Now I'm back and at least one has found me. Was almost to the mark where it's not legally collectible, just 6 more months, but I was served today. The entire debt for all four cards is about 25K. At some point I would like a life and house etc though I'm used to buying everything in cash I would need a loan for a house. As I have been served, now what is the process? I signed up for a credit repair service Friday night and now Saturday, bang. What's up with that?
