Default and Charge off

What is the difference between these two things? I have a student loan listed on my credit as DEFAULT. They are still pursuing payments from me, I've made some payments but they are not showing on my credit file, the account is listed as Default. Don't they have to change that if i'm paying or what am i paying for?
I live in Maryland, the debt is for alittle over $5,000.00 for student loan. I was making monthly payments (between $30-$50 a month). Thanks for anyone's help
