What kind of checking account do I need?

Currently a judgement is being entered against me for a Citibank card. I live in NC. I have been told by several people that I need to have my husband listed as the primary person on our checking account, myself as secondary, to protect our account. When I spoke to my bank today, they said there is no such thing--that if we are both on the account it will be a joint account and we would both be considered primary.
Does anyone know specifically the kind of account we neeed to protect our money? Thanks!
