Welcome to TN - I'm in Nashville ;)

First of all, how long have you been in TN ?
There ARE residency requirements for filing BK.

You say there's a judgment against you - where ? In CA ? What about the new lawsuit, did they sue you here in TN or in CA ??

TN doesn't have the greatest exemptions, but they're not awful either. Filing w/o a lawyer, is a risky business. You pay the $209 filing fee yourself (can be paid in paymentss) but YOU are going to have to be able to handle all the court paperwork. Many lawyers will take payments for their fees and most give free initial consultations. Even if you decide you cannot afford a lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you at least consult with 2 or 3.

I would also suggest that you buy the Nolo Press book "How to File Chapter 7 Bankruptcy", its great even for people with a lawyer.
