Help with Old debt.

I had a Debt to a tech school back in 1999, then the compnay that I had the debt with went bankrupt and sold the debt to a debt recovery firm back in 2001. THey are corrently reporting that the debt is still upaid. I was told that the debt was charged off and now this company wants the money and has turned it over to a law firm to bully me into paying. Is there a statue of limitation on this debt. A coStudent told me that it should drop off in 2005. Is this correct?
