If you don't pay, it will stay on your credit report for seven years from the date of default, unless you're just lucky. If you *do* pay, it will definitely stay on your credit report for seven years from the date of default. And a "paid" collection entry hurts your rating just as much as an unpaid one. The damage is already done. Your best bet is to cut your losses now. And if you can give Sherman a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, you'll be thousands of victims' hero! What have you got to lose? It's not like they can claim even more money than they already have for your having the nerve to buck up to them. :-)
