account bought or assigned?

is this something you have to ask the ca or oc directly? i'm not sure how to tell if any of my debts were purchased or if they were assigned. only one on my credit report has a date listed as "assigned." so i'm assuming that one wasn't purchased--but none of the others say anything like that.
