I have a chemotherapy bill in excess of $49,000. I was making monthly payments of $100 - $200 per month regularly. I was contacted by a collection person from the medical center. We offered $18,000 cash to settle and it was refused. They wanted me to sign a financial statement. I was advised not to as that would allow them to access personal and financial information. Although I continued to make payments, the medical center turned it over to a collection agency. When I talked to them they said the medical center must have thought my payments weren't large enough. It is acceptable to the collection agency. I don't get it!! Almost everyone I talk to says that making any size payment on a medical bill will prevent collection activity. Apparently I haven't been talking to the right people. I cannot afford an attorney. Any advise? Thank you.
