I prepaid my amex card and now its cancelled?

...does not make sense. I called Amex and told them that i will be charging 20K on the my charge card which i have for years. They told me my monthly limit is 18K and the only option i have is to prepay 20k before they can authorize it. I agreed to that, the reason being was that merchant told me that it would be quicker for me to buy the merchandise if i pay by any credit card.
After 4 days of prepaying Amex called any told me that my card is temorarily cancelled till my financial review and they need my pay stups copy of tax returns etc. What the hell is that all about? This lady i talked to at Amex told me that the whole thing is very stupid on Amex part but she said Never prepay to Amex otherwise this is what they do.
I dont have any problems sending them my pay stubs etc. but my question is how can they do this ... they told me if i dont comply with theire demands my card would be cancelled and negative feedback would go to my credit report. Thanks for any input.
