Sounds to me like your super-large pre-payment triggered a fraud audit. It could even be something required by the US Patriot Act and it's anti-money laundering efforts.

If it's the latter, they have no choice in the matter because it's Federal law. Amex usually treats its customers with respect, unless they default.
