Hey, Im a 18 year old, and my parents are in their early 50's. We are Chinese, and we immigrated from Hong-Kong when I was 1 or so. When we first arrived we lived a pretty good life, then my father decided to open a restaurant... the business survived for a year before failing. We then moved away from that area to find a better job while paying the debts at the same time. When we finally paid it off (so the associate of the creditor said) we were happy.... then about 3 years later, we get a call from a Debt Collecting Agency saying we owe 9,000 in outstanding debts, and are willing to accept a payment of 5,000 upfront and the debt will be cleared... we sounded suspicious, and the people called back about 3-4 times. Now, we dont receive any calls from them, but they threatened to sue us about 2 years ago and it never happened. So, is this for real or just a hoax. The creditor (Discover) i believe, doesn't send us any mail or anything reguarding the debt, except they keep trying to get us to register a new card. Please help?
