Help! summons to court on credit card debt

I received a knock on door and was served a summons to court by attorney (regarding delinquent providian credit card balance of $4000). Last payment was June 2002. Resident of CO. The summons states a date for me to appear in court. My question is....If I don't show in court, what will happen? I heard they will file judgement and will go on credit report.
