That's exactly what they are looking for. If you don't show, and don't answer, they will get a default judgement. If they get a judgement against you, they can, without warning.....seize bank accounts, seize non exempt property, force sale of property, garnish wages. The burden of proof is on them. You can make the prove that they have the legal right to collect and sue on the account, that this is your account, that all charges associated with the account are correct and allowed by your state law. Truth is, if this is a 3rd party collector, they most likely can not prove anything. Protect your assets, mainly your banking info. If you have ever paid the original creditor with your current bank account, then they have your banking info. Get a new bank account with someone else as primary if possible. Judgement is public record, and yes it will show on your credit report.
