My father's passing/ I need your help

Hi All, I am not sure what nickname my father used when on this site, but I must say that he was a regular and you guys have been very helpful to him. He actually got me hooked on this site too. Unfortunately, my father passed on June 4th and I have a question about what to do about his credit card bills. I believe that the cards were in his name only, so can we ask that the debtors absolve the debt because of his passing? If they were joint cards, with his and mom's name what should I do (my mom is mentally incapacitated)? Also are any of you aware of anyone that could give free legal advice about debt, and estate stuff (my dad didn't have a will) in the Maryland-DC area? Thanks again gang. Jenn
