how do charge offs affect my income tax return?

I posted awhile ago asking about this, but cannot find that post or any replies. I'm working with a debt settlement attorney and have already settled one of my debts. I received a letter from the company stating the the amount that was charged off would be reported to the IRS, but they didn't explain. Does that mean I will need to count it as income? (And yes, I've been told before that I didn't need to go through an attorney- that I could negotiate settlement deals with the credit companies myself. Let's not bring that into this, ok?) All I want is some info on how charge offs will affect my tax returns. Thanks.
