Both NY and Mass are "cause of action" States. This means the SOL starts from the first breach or default, that is the first time the creditor COULD have legally filed suit for default. Now, if you were late in 1996, and then got caught up and were paying on time for a while and then defaulted again, only the first default date that preceded the chargeoff date counts for the start of SOL.
