Served - Now What?

I have been served with a summons for delinquent cc debt with 20 days to respond. The summons requests an answer, there is no court date scheduled. I don't want to hand them a default judgement. Do I negotiate with them by phone, letter, go in person, hire a lawyer to respond, etc???? Any recommendations for course of action are greatly appreciated.
