Can you be fired for having bad credit?

My job has recently been calling people in and telling them they must pay or make some kind of payments on certain overdue debts or be terminated in 45 days. Can they legitimately do this? I'm pretty sure that they can. I haven't been called yet. I have credit card debt that I'm behind on.
