In many states, employment is "at will," which means an employee can be fired at any time for any reason or for no reason. Unless there's a union or other contract in place, the employer doesn't need a reason.

If the employer is getting a kickback from the CA's when you pay the debt (it would be interesting to see if any CA's have tried that approach yet) that should be illegal. But it probably isn't. This would be a great way to shake down people in low-end jobs that can be basically instantly replaced with someone else off the street. The employer gets a nice bonus if the employee pays. If he's a particularly good employee they might not follow through with the threat to fire him. Unless it is a job where there's a legitimate reason to demand no unpaid debts, (in that case you'd have a hard time finding another similar job) I wouldn't pay, then see what happens.
