Most employers can terminate anyone for no reason at all.

I had an employer about 20 years ago that started requiring employees show up 15 minutes before the shift without pay "just in case we need you in early" - in which case they would pay. Those not complying were written up. (You may think 15 minutes is trivial, but over a year's time this employer could exercise control over each person up to 65 unpaid hours.) The labor board in California said that was a violation of the Labor Code, but if anyone complained there was no protection for whistleblowers. The employer is informed of the identity of the complainant and could terminate "at will". I was so fed up that I filed the complaint and resigned.
