Talk to Discover card lawyer before court, or ignore them?

If anyone can help this New York State resident with advice, it would be much appreciated.

A court date has been set for a little more than a month from now, as I am the defendant being sued by the firm of Cohen & Slamowitz representing Discover.

After going and providing my answer to the summons, the law office sent me a letter saying they want me to call them and discuss "the possibility of settling this case".

The only settlement I will accept is for the case to be withdrawn/thrown out and getting a completely clear credit record on the line of Discover at all three CRAs.

On my answer to the summons, I stated that I am seeking 10K in damages (they say I owed about 8-9K).

I have not spoken with Discover card or these lawyers. Discover card did not properly validate the debt when requested to by certified return receipt mail. All they did was send copies of the previous 12 months billing statements.

My questions are:

a)The letter from the law office is a trick, like all the ones that they sent before I answered the summons, and I should ignore them completely, Yes or No?

b)From the description provided, what do you think the outcome of me representing myself at this court hearing, seeking at minimum the throwing out of the case and therefore that I owe Discover nothing, or at best that they will have to pay me damages?

Thnaks in advance for your thoughts.
