Was it a trick. Maybe, yes and no. If a law firm offers a settlement on a debt, it is probably because they don't believe that they have enough evidence to fight it in court. If they had the signed contracts, certified copies of canceled checks showing you paid on the account, and an accounting of the charges, they would not be concerned one bit about you challenging them in court and countersuing them. So the offer may be real in that they don't have anything to fight you in court with. THe other option in which Discover is known for doing, is offer a settlement, get an admission of owing the debt in writing, and then renege on the agreement and take you to court. They will do this if they don't have the means to prove the debt but they are tricking you into admission. Discover is a ruthless bunch. I can't honestly say which their intentions are because I have seen consumer reports of where Discover has played it both ways. Discover as a rule plays hardball and don't like to settle if they don't have to.
