Charge off clarification

Can an account that is charged off and closed by the Original creditor show a balance or must it show $0, especially if there is a collection agency now pursuing the matter. I had a providian account charge off in 2/02 and it still show a balance of $2000. If the amount should be shown as 0 what type of defense do I use with the CRA. Please advise
