They CAN "come after you" forever, however each State has a SOL ( statute of limitations) which prevents them from SUING you after a number of years.

In addition, the account can only stay on your credit reports for 7 years.

In both cases, if you are beyond the "legal" SOL for your State, you can stop their collection activities and get the account removed from your credit report if you send them the "SOL letter" from my website.

This assumes, of course, that they have not already obtained a judgment against you, and that it is a debt for credit card or other defaulted loan and NOT for taxes, student loans, child support, or Municipal fines.
