From Startribune.com and KARE11.com State Files Lawsuits against Two Collection Agencies The Minnesota attorney general's office has filed lawsuits against two collection agencies that allegedly violated several state laws. The lawsuits were filed against Minnesota-based Allied Interstate and New Jersey-based J.B.C. and Associates, PC. Lori Swanson of the Attorney General's office says there appears to be a trend of debt collectors becoming even more aggressive. Among other things, she says that has led to the unlawful harassment of some people who don't owe money at all. Allied allegedly has not given proper notice to the people they call that they can dispute the debt in writing. The company also is accused of making repeated collection calls to innocent consumers, who didn't owe money. J.B.C. is accused of unlawfully threatening to sue on debts that have passed the six-year statute of limitations and threatening penalties higher than the law allows.
