I keep getting these calls from OC's to whom I have already explained my situation; Disabled, house with lien, '86 Subaru, etc. Everyone I have talked to who has gone through this says "Don't talk to them, they'll construe it as an attempt to settle, and re-age the debt" With the new anti-consumer laws passed in the late 1990's, I don't know what they can do to me. My house is assessed by the county at about $50,000. But many folks tell me it's worth more than that. I really don't want to be kicked out of my house! I would be homeless. I live in New Mexico. At first, I thought the exemptions which apply to bankruptcy would apply to me, now, I'm not so sure. Gosh, they sure are calling a lot. Should I talk to them or not. I have sent letters to the CA's the OC's have turned my debt over to and what usually happens is that they hand it back to the OC. what does THAT mean? I don't send the letters CR because I can't afford the fees, but I DO make copies.
