Yes, you are so right, JK. They will add "collection charges" of up to 18% to the total owed. But stretched out over up to 30 years, it's hardly noticable. It surely beats having CA's hound you, or have your tax refunds or wages garnished until the end of time.

Seven years from the original date of default, the paid collections will fall off of your credit report, leaving nothing but the new and current loan to help re-establish your credit.
