They are WRONG, I'm sorry. And I don't fault the ombudsman for not knowing about this. It isn't exactly well advertised.

But I paid a C-note for the information that I've just given you free of charge. :-) I wouldn't steer you wrong on this, because getting my loans out of default (when the CA's where calling me at work and threatening to garnish my wages) was one of the biggest reliefs of my lifetime. You will not believe how that lifts the weight from your shoulders!!! You just have to experience it for yourself.
