lawsuit?

i was contacted today about a pending lawsuit, or what i suspect is a pending lawsuit. it's for a $4000 credit card debt with last activity in september of 2001. evidently, the suit is being filed in california, which is strange considering the account was opened, paid on and subsequently charged off in north carolina (and i now live in nevada.) this was all almost 3 years ago. so ... that being the case, i'm kind of confused as of what to do. they claim i can either cough up 4000$ right now or 500$ a month for the rest of the year, neither of which i can do. they seemed to be pretty hesitant to settle otherwise. any advice on this?
