Hi,
I live in NC and am clueless as to what exactly is happening and what to do. I would appeciate any advice. 3 years ago my husband cut off 3 of his fingers. He was in and out of work for 2 years. I am unable to work, I take care of our son who has multiple disabilities.

During the 2 years of him being out of work (and having no money)we ran up 5 credit card bills, mostly on gas, groceries, bills, etc. My husband is back at work and we have managed to pay off/settle 3 of them. The 4th has been turned over to collections and they of course have hounded us. We intend to pay them at the end of the year.

But the 5th company has put a judgement on us. We were served the papers yesterday and have 20 days to respond. We were advised seek help (a lawyer)- If we could afford a lawyer, we would have continued payments to the card.

We offered to settle with them for a reduced amount (which is what we did with the others) and they said they did not sell their loans and wanted the full amount.

The amount was a little over $6000 which is now $7000 because of fees. The papers we were served are confusing, but says to list things we wish to exempt from them taking and things we wish to claim as not exempt. There's only 3 lines for each. Can we list more than 3 things on an attached paper?

Will they really take our belongings? We have nothing of value, other than my son's wheelchair. My husbands car is a clunker, and the van I drive is assessible for my son and used for doctors appts. We own our land worth about $5000 but the house we live in is in my father-in-law's name.

After I file the papers listing the exemptions(up to like $3500- which the wheelchair alone will meet), what will happen then? How does this process work?
Thank You.
