I think if you do that the bank will just report a balance of $0.00 to the credit bureaus. It would have the same effect on your score as paying off the full balance. Paying a balance down to below 15% of the credit limit is good for your score, though some people say you should leave a few dollars on it rather than zero.

The best "other trick" is to get added as an Authorized User on someone's card who has good credit and a high limit. You do not need to have a card or charge anything, just have them tell their company to make you authorized user. If they ever default on the account, you will not be obligated to pay, but you may have some trouble keeping their bad credit from dogging you.
