What you probably signed was a check that said it was to be considered a promissory note. Some states treat promissory notes almsot the same as written contracts. You need legal counsel to determine if it was legally binding on you.

But more than anything, you need to be worried that the company will counter any answer you present (such as "lack of knowledge") by making it seem you deliberately committed fraud. Saying it was in your maiden name, signing it in your maiden name, then only making one payment doesn't look too good....especially if you're answering questions evasively.
